Annually, AIHA solicits and reviews submissions for this award with the purpose of recognizing an outstanding leader in the industrial hygiene community. The award is in honor of Ruth and Larry Birkner who were murdered in their home in Sedona, Arizona in 2004.
Mr. Birkner, MA, MBA, CIH, CSP, was vice president and technical director of McIntyre Birkner and Associates. Mr. Birkner served in numerous leadership positions in industrial hygiene associations and managed corporate safety and industrial hygiene programs prior to becoming an expert witness specialist, trainer and consultant. Ms. McIntyre-Birkner was president of McIntyre Birkner and Associates, a consulting and training firm.
The Birkners were well-known as leaders and promoters of professionalism within the environmental health and safety field. They were also recognized as organizers and speakers at conferences, authors of magazine articles and books, and volunteers in many projects along with promoting industrial hygienists to broaden their skills into other areas of the Environmental, Health, and Safety fields.
